Wingrove's Dairy Vanilla Ice Cream Cone | Original Pop-Realism Drawing by Mike Pitzer

Before ice cream became another aisle in a supermarket, local dairies and neighborhood ice cream stands were part of the identity of a community.

A cone from a place like Wingrove’s Dairy carried more than vanilla ice cream. It carried the familiarity of a local name, a familiar stop, and a place connected to the routines and traditions of the people who lived there.

Years later, the name itself can unlock memories that seemed long forgotten.

That’s American Material Memory: sometimes the most ordinary objects preserve not only our personal stories, but a little piece of the communities that shaped them.

From the Artist:

I’ve now drawn the Wingrove’s Dairy Ice Cream Cone twice, each time for someone special. The wonderful memories of climbing onto a school bus and making the trip to get our free ice cream are something I still hold very dear to my heart from my Algonac Elementary School days. But today, it’s new memories of making people feel special as they look at my artwork wherever they’ve decided to hang it.
