Artist Statement

Mike Pitzer, Pop-Realism Artist

My work is created using highly realistic illustration techniques to capture the faded paint, chipped edges, and weathered surfaces of vintage toys. Rather than simply documenting these objects, I use realism to evoke memory. Through careful observation of color, texture, and light, I transform familiar childhood artifacts into tangible reminders of experiences that many of us share. Especially those of us who grew up on the St. Clair River in Algonac, Michigan.

I am fascinated by how ordinary toys can hold extraordinary personal histories. Every scratch suggests an adventure, every dent recalls an imagined battle, and every worn surface reflects years of handling and play. By rendering these objects with meticulous precision, I invite viewers to pause, look closely, and reconnect with memories that have quietly shaped their identities. Each still-life composition becomes a time capsule, preserving the imagination, curiosity, and sense of wonder that define childhood.

While my work is not trompe-l'œil, it embraces realism's ability to make a sheet of paper feel like a display case for a treasured artifact. My hope is that my drawings reveal vintage toys as more than nostalgic collectibles—they are enduring vessels of memory that connect us to our formative years and remind us that those stories continue to shape who we become.
