Vintage Hubley Cap Gun | Original Graphite Drawing by Mike Pitzer

A cap gun could turn an ordinary afternoon into the Wild West.

For generations of American children, the crack of a paper cap and the smell that followed were part of imaginative play. A backyard, basement, sidewalk, or vacant lot could become a frontier town, a train robbery, or whatever story a child happened to invent that day.

That’s the power of American Material Memory. The object was manufactured as a toy, but its real value was created by the child holding it. Long after the caps were gone and the toy itself disappeared, the memories remained.

From the Artist:

Here’s what I remember about having a cap gun to play with as a kid, discovering you could take a roll of caps and hit with a hammer on the cement and make an even louder BANG!

That was, until Dad got home and took away the cap gun, his hammer and tried to figure out how he was going to fix the crack in the sidewalk we’d created. — YIKES!
