A vanilla cone after a ballgame. A stop at Dairy Queen on a hot afternoon. Sitting outside before the ice cream melted faster than you could eat it. These weren’t important events at the time. They were simply part of growing up.
Decades later, those ordinary moments can become the ones we remember most clearly.
That’s American Material Memory: familiar things have a way of preserving the everyday experiences we never realized we would someday miss.

I’ve drawn this ice cream cone several times now, and each time I still think of riding my bike uptown to grab a 25-cent vanilla cone and then ride to the Lion’s Club pool and go swimming all day... and hopefully, to see Kathy Meldrum and her younger sister Jill, who were two of the cutest girls I’d ever seen.
They were always at the pool, and probably the only reason I joined the swim team.
So others may look at my drawing and see a gigantic ice cream cone. What I see is a gigantic crush.
