TThis pop-realism artwork by Mike Pitzer presents a meticulously rendered 1950s Garton ESKIMO sled, brought to life through graphite and Prismacolor pencils. The drawing captures the sled's utilitarian form with precision, emphasizing the interplay between the worn wooden planks and the subtly aged red metal runners. The vertical “ESKIMO” lettering on the central plank draws immediate attention, grounding the work with a strong sense of vintage authenticity. The composition balances the sled’s rustic materials and functional design, revealing both the simplicity and character embedded in this classic winter object. Pitzer’s attention to texture and shadow lends a quiet presence, inviting reflection on craftsmanship and nostalgia within a contemporary pop-realist framework.
I believe this is a 1950s, 36” Garton ESKIMO sled made by the Garton Toy Company. It’s also No.2 in a series of 15 sleds I’ve challenged myself to draw. Each has its own amazing patina and funky retro graphics, and each brings back such amazing memories as a kid growing up in the little town of Algonac, Michigan, on the St. Clair River.
