Bubble gum belongs to one of the most universal experiences of American childhood: buying a little something simply because you could.
The bright packaging, familiar flavor, and ritual of chewing and blowing bubbles made Dubble Bubble part of everyday life for generations.
American Material Memory often begins with something this simple. A piece of gum may have cost almost nothing, but it could be purchased with allowance money, shared with a friend, enjoyed after school, or associated with a particular game or place.
The object was temporary. The memory wasn’t.
From the Artist:
By the time I drew my third Dubble Bubble, I knew I wasn't really drawing gum anymore.
I was drawing Little League. The Dodgers. The old Lions Clubhouse Field. Sitting on the bench chewing enough gum until my jaw hurt.
Baseball memories are funny. I remember the baseball games and all the little things surrounding them — the gum, the gloves, the dust and the guys I played with.
Maybe that's why objects work so well for me. The gum and Lion’s Club Field are gone. But looking at my DUBBLE BUBBLE gum drawing can bring a whole afternoon back.
