The battered Tonka front loader was built to move imaginary mountains. It carved roads through backyard dirt, hauled gravel from one end of the sandbox to the other, and survived years of hard play with little more than scratched paint and dented steel to show for it. Unlike today's disposable toys, these machines were made to endure—becoming trusted companions to generations of young builders.
This drawing is part of my ongoing exploration of American Material Memory, the idea that ordinary objects quietly preserve extraordinary lives. The front loader isn't simply a toy; it's a reminder of afternoons spent outdoors, hands stained with dirt, imaginations at work, and a childhood measured not by screens, but by the places we built and the worlds we created. Mine even found a second life years later as an ashtray in my college apartment while I attended ArtCenter College of Design.
