"Paycheck" by Mike Pitzer

$1,500.00

At some point in my career in advertising, I stopped finding my job to be fulfilling for me. I reflected on my values and goals, I considered potential changes within my current role, I explored opportunities for growth, I even look into career changes that better align with what I found to be meaningful work. Unfortunately, I never had the advice of a career counselor or mentor to help clarify and set options.

As a creative person, I thought I could always find the silver lining in every grey cloud, whether it was going to work for a mediocre ad agency I was certain I make into the next hot ad shop or choosing to with difficult clients I knew I could develop and sell award-winning work too. By the time I realized none of that was going to happen, regardless of how much talent and drive I had, It wasn’t going to happen. That’s when I realized I was basically fucked.

Being on salary, I didn’t get overtime pay. I got the same pay regardless of how many hours I worked or how many clients I saved or won. I allowed myself to be exploited with little work-life balance. Always being pressured to work longer hours to come up with great, bulk creative. As I said, I was basically fucked.

My artwork, “Paycheck”, is the literal, visual translation of my feeling of being trapped by having to make money while my creative self was crying for that opportunity to allow my artwork to flourish.
