My new pop-realism drawing, “Vintage Lightening Guider Sled”, is 35.5” W by 56” T, created with graphite and Prismacolor pencil on paper. It captures a classic light-colored oak wooden sled, with red lightning graphics and worn blue lettering across the center. Shown from above, the detailed textures of well-used wood and metal bring the sled’s history and winter memories to life. This piece continues my exploration of highly detailed drawings, focusing on familiar objects rendered with precise observation and a quiet sense of nostalgia from my childhood growing up in Algonac, Michigan on the St. Clair River.
While I created a highly rendered sled, showing years of use and patina, one of the touches I love to do is add a 3-dimensional aspect to my sleds. Those are “ropes”, which I collect and match to the drawing. They hang free, enhancing the realistic feeling. That’s why, when framed, you should consider a shallow shadow box of about 1/2”. Just a thought.
