This pop-realism drawing by Mike Pitzer presents a vibrant and intricately rendered homage to a classic 1960s wooden sled, capturing both its nostalgic spirit and timeless design with remarkable clarity. Seen from above, the sled’s natural wood finish glows warmly against a pristine white backdrop, allowing every detail—from the carefully aged wooden slats to the bold red metal runners—to stand out with lifelike precision. The central plank proudly showcases the vintage “Flexible Flyers” logo, complete with a dynamic red arrow that adds a sense of motion and playfulness to the composition.
The craftsmanship shines through in the meticulous depiction of textures: the subtle grain of the wood, the soft patina of rusted steel, and the signs of wear that hint at countless winter adventures. Pitzer’s artwork invites viewers to pause and appreciate an everyday object transformed into a finely crafted portrait, where nostalgia and realism intertwine. Its clean presentation and thoughtful execution evoke the joy of youthful winters past, celebrating the simple pleasures of sledding with a refined and engaging visual approach.
This drawing is No.5 in Pitzer’s series of Vintage Sleds.
This is my large, pop-realism drawing of a 1960s Happy Time Flying Arrow sled created in colored pencil and graphite on paper. It’s also sled No.4 in a series of 15 sleds I’ve challenged myself to draw over this coming year. Each has its own amazing patina and funky retro graphics, and each brings back such amazing winter memories as a kid growing up in the little town of Algonac, Michigan, on the St. Clair River.
